With more time the sweet notes get darker: caramel, brandied raisins. A little bit of leather as well in there as it sits and some cherry jam. Normally, in the case of double-matured malts you see the first maturation in bourbon casks before the spirit hits the cask that held the much heavier spirit. The spirit in it spent 10 years in a port pipe before being put into a refill bourbon hogshead for another five. This one was released in the Danish market and has a somewhat unusual composition. It continued on Wednesday with one of the 15 yo casks released in 2019 to mark the distillery’s 15th anniversary. It started on Monday with Batch 6 of the Heavily Peated, which was in line with the high quality of Batch 4 and Batch 5. On the other hand, the Macallan 12 might have better prestige, but it tends to be dominated by oak, overshadowing other flavors in the ensemble.Kilkerran week has gone very well so far. With its abundant baking spice and dried fruit notes, and a subtle oak presence, it delivers a delightful experience from start to finish. In my opinion, the Redbreast 12 is a more satisfying and indulgent choice compared to the Macallan 12. Macallan 12 vs Redbreast 12: Which is better? On the palate, Redbreast 12 boasts a creamy and chewy texture, with ripe fruit, citrus, sherry wine, and oak flavors. The nose is rich with vanilla, caramel, ginger, and a hint of orange peel. Redbreast is the whiskey responsible for changing my perception of Irish Whiskey which I always considered to be Meh at best. Palate: Ripe fruit, citrus, sherry, baking spice, oak.Nose: Vanilla, caramel, ginger, orange peel.However, considering its price, I wouldn’t recommend using it as a mixer. Overall, it serves as a great introduction to sherry cask matured Scotch before venturing into sherry bombs like the Macallan Sherry Oak 12.Īdding water tones down the oak and warmth, making it more approachable. The oak flavor is noticeable but may be too intense for some. The Macallan 12 Double Cask offers rich flavors with a subtle chocolate note, a hint of spice, and a pleasing warmth. The finish is long, showcasing more oak, dried fruit, and a touch of spice. The warmth is pleasant and not overwhelming. On the palate, the Double Cask 12 reveals a powerful oak presence followed by bitter chocolate, sherry, and a hint of citrus. The nose presents a delightful combination of sweetness, sherry, dried fruit, and oak.
